Central South University (CSU) is situated in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city in Hunan, China. CSU was established in April 2000 by merging the former Central South University of Technology (CSUT), the former Changsha Railway University (CRU) and the former Hunan Medical University (HMU). The main disciplines of CSUT and CRU originated from the disciplines of Mining & Metallurgy and Civil Engineering of Hunan Industrial College established in 1903.The predecessor of HMU was Xiangya Medical College founded in 1914 as one of China's earliest colleges offering western medicine courses. Central South University was selected as a Class A university under China's World-Class Universities Initiative in September 2017. In 2020 THE World University Ranking, CSU shows a remarkable progress from ranking 601-800 to 401-500. In 2019 THE Asia University Rankings, CSU ranked 85th, entering TOP 100 for the first time and becoming the fastest improving university in THE Asia University Rankings and Emerging Economies Rankings. Central South University has 31 schools, 104 undergraduate majors, 35 first level disciplines authorized to offer Doctorate Degree, 46 first level disciplines authorized to offer Master’s Degree, 32 post-doctoral research stations, 16 global top 1% Essential Science Indicators (ESI) disciplines and 3 top 1% ESI disciplines. There are 27 national science and technology innovation bases, and 61 national key clinical specialties. More than 57,000 students are studying in CSU now. The history of Central South University could be traced back to 100 years ago with a legacy on education, advocating the spirit of Learning by Doing and Learning for Using and implementing the ethos of Virtue, Truth, Perfection, Inclusiveness.
