Starting as South Korea's first engineering institute (Dong-A Engineering Institute in 1939), Hanyang University has now evolved into a research-intensive private university which consists of 22 colleges and 19 graduate schools. The main campus is in Seoul and the second one, ERICA campus (Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan), is located in the city of Ansan. With "Love in Truth and Deed" as its motto and its educational philosophy, Hanyang University with its proud 280,000 alumni has produced a large number of national and international leaders and professionals over the years. Hanyang University has been heavily investing time, personnel, and expense in efforts to achieve further internationalization. Subsequently, Hanyang now has sisterhood relationships with 550 distinguished universities in 64 countries around the world. Diverse interchanges with partner universities include visiting professorships, student exchange programs, and international conferences. Over the past years, Hanyang University has continuously invested in their global projects and is renowned for its well organized international programs. In 2012, Hanyang was ranked 1st in South Korea by the Ministry of Education and Science in recruiting and managing international students. Various programs are offered for international students, including the Hanyang International Summer School and the Study-Tour program. The Hanyang International Sumer School (HISS) was first established in 1997 to encourage more international exchanges between Hanyang and its partner universities. Every year, HISS offers more than 40 courses that are taught in English to international students from around the globe. In the program, there are a wide-range of courses including Korean Studies, Humanties, Business, Economics, International Relations, Media & Communication, Design, Science, Sports, and Korean language. International students can also experience Korean culture by participating in various cultural programs and field trips. The HISS now becomes increasingly popular among international students. In 2012, for example, 826 international students enrolled to the HISS. This figure was a 16% increase compared to that of 2011. Hanyang University also provides the Study-Tour program, which invites students from partner universities to stay in Seoul for one or two weeks to participate in special lecture series and visit to world renowned industries and cultural site. Industry-university cooperation is the driving force behind Hanyang's successful efforts to put ideas and innovation into practice. In 2003, Hanyang University launched the Industry-University Cooperation Foundation (IUCF), a first among Korea's private universities, in order to create a cooperative environment that was conducive to high quality research and professional training. Hanyang's IUCF is the nation's largest organization of its kind. Specifically, the ERICA Campus is equipped with Korea's largest university-research-industry cooperation infrastructure. Hanyang University and its partners conduct collaborative projects and extensive networking. Some of the collaborative research include to create a software course with Samsung Electronics and to build a joint Automotive Research Center with Hyundai Motors. The founding philosophy of Hanyang University is "Love in Truth and in Deed." Indeed, Hanyang is the first university in Korea to establish its own public service corps. The Hanyang Volunteer Corps (HVC) provides students with opportunities to experience a wide range of community and overseas volunteer activities. Hanyang students not only learn to understand and appreciate the value of philanthropic love, but also contribute to society positively and actively. At hanyang, "Love in Truth and in Deed" is truly put into practice for the benefit of everyone involved. Hanyang University's true strength comes from the Hanyang graduates who strive to shape the future of Korea and the world. Since its founding in 1939, Hanyang has overcome obstacles and challenges to achieve success and progress, while always focusing on its mission to provide practical education and professional training. In 2009 the university ranked 4th for the number of alumni serving as CEOs and executives at Korea's top 100 companies. In the same year the Ecole des Mines de Paris ranked Hanyang University 89th for the number of alumni CEOs in the world's top 500 companies. Hanyang is proud of its 280,000 alumni who continue to distinguish themselves in their fields of expertise and through their "Love in Truth and in Deed."
