Located in Chiayi County in southwestern Taiwan, the National Chung Cheng University (CCU) is best known for its dedication to both the arts and the sciences. Founded in 1989, it is one of Taiwan’s most modern universities, and highly regarded in the country. There are seven Colleges – Humanities, Science, Law, Engineering, Social Sciences, Management, and Education – as well as centres for language studies, teacher education, learning, and general education. With a strong emphasis on innovation and ideas, it is research-focused with a global outlook: university staff say they strive for co-ordination with faculties both on campus and internationally. It has partnerships with universities across the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, China, France, Germany, Australia and more. Surrounded by a scenic natural landscape, a key aim for the university is environmental sustainability. The campus is known for its distinctive architecture and variety of tree species. The library boasts a collection of over one million books, bounded journals and electronic resources. It continues to strive to be more student-friendly and has been implementing new technologies to improve the service. The sports centre is also an impressive addition to the campus, with a swimming pool, gyms, rock climbing, track and field, and a golf driving range among its facilities. Very few of CCU’s courses are taught in English – most of the undergraduate programmes are taught in Chinese. Applicants should apply online to be considered for entry. International students will have to apply for a Resident Visa ahead of their arrival and then an Alien Resident Certificate once they get to Taiwan. The university’s Office of International Affairs assists students from abroad with living and studying in Taiwan, and local student ambassadors are also on hand to help. There are language training courses in Chinese depending on your proficiency.
