The Business School at Harvard University offers these departments and concentrations: accounting, consulting, e-commerce, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics, finance, general management, health care administration, human resources management, international business, leadership, manufacturing and technology management, marketing, not-for-profit management, production/operations management, organizational behavior, portfolio management, public administration, public policy, real estate, sports business, supply chain management/logistics, quantitative analysis/statistics and operations research, tax, and technology. Its tuition is full-time: $73,440 per year. At graduation, 70.90 percent of graduates of the full-time program are employed.

Graduate students at Harvard Business School get a hands-on education through the case method, which poses true-to-life problems students must tackle in teams. The experiential learning extends to field study teams, in which small groups of students evaluate existing organizations, and immersion trips, intense weeks of study in another country over winter breaks.

HBS students can complete an MBA or doctoral degree, or can take executive education classes. (HBS graduates can take many executive education courses at a 30 percent discount.) HBS students can also enroll in joint degree programs in conjunction with Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Graduate business school students may live on campus in Cambridge, Mass. Students can also research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

To supplement their education, students can assume leadership positions in more than 70 clubs. The annual HBS Show, a live musical theatre production put on by MBA students, adds some levity into the rigorous course schedule.

There are more than 100,000 graduates of HBS, scores of whom have gone on to lead major corporations. Some of the particularly notable alumni include James Dimon, president and CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co.; Meg Whitman, president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard; and Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of General Electric.

The law school at Harvard University has an application deadline of Feb. 1. The full-time program application fee at the law school at Harvard University is $85. Its tuition is full-time: $67,081. The student-faculty ratio is 7.1:1.

Opportunities to put classroom lessons to work start early at Harvard Law School. Through the school’s Student Practice Organizations, first-year students can test their legal skills by helping local musicians understand copyright laws or representing state prison inmates at disciplinary hearings, among other opportunities. Older students can partake in HLS legal clinics, the largest offering of any school in the world. All students must complete at least 40 hours of pro bono, or volunteer, work before graduating.

HLS is unique in its grading procedures; instead of traditional letter grades, students receive a distinction of honors, pass, low pass or fail. The HLS buildings are folded into the university campus in Harvard Square, a hub of student life with restaurants, bars and shops in Cambridge, Mass. Students can live in on-campus dormitories, suites and apartments, though more than 60 percent find housing off campus. To give legal education a global slant, students can check out the joint J.D./LL.M. program between HLS and the U.K.’s University of Cambridge or can study abroad for a three-week winter term or a semester.

For those prospective students worried about law school debt, HLS offers the Low Income Protection Plan to help graduates with minimal salaries manage their student loans. Among the school’s most prominent alumni are President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama, as well as more than a dozen current and former Supreme Court Justices, including Chief Justice John Roberts.

In the years since Harvard Medical School was founded in 1782, HMS has continued to innovate and influence medical education. Students today are divided into five academic societies, which offer mentoring and advising and enable team-based learning under faculty supervision. Students interested in a biomedical research career can apply to the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program.

Following the annual White Coat Ceremony for the entering class, most HMS students pursue the Pathways program, in which they study core scientific concepts and build clinical skills early before beginning principal clinical experiences in the second year. In preclerkship courses, there are no traditional letter grades – students are graded either satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Students study at the medical school campus in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area, and can complete clinicals at affiliated institutions throughout the city. Medical students may also opt for joint degrees, like an M.D./Ph.D. and M.D./MBA, and can cross-register in courses at other schools within the university, including the highly ranked Law School and Business School.

Despite the grueling course load, HMS makes sure its students have some fun through events and social groups, like the HMS Chamber Music Society, along with a variety of extracurricular organizations focused on service, identity and more.

Medical and dental students who wish to live on campus share a residence hall. Among close to 100,000 living alumni of Harvard Medical School are the first Surgeon General of the U.S. Army Joseph Lovell and surgeon and former U.S. Senator Bill Frist.

Outside of class, students can check out the weekly lunch sessions in the Professional Development Seminar Series, and can get involved in more than 10 research centers on campus, including the Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering and the Center for Nanoscale Systems. Students may apply to live on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, Mass., or can get administrative assistance finding housing elsewhere. Foreign students make up nearly half the student body. Notable alumni include Steve Ballmer, co-founder of Microsoft; Craig Silverstein, director of technology at Google; and Danielle Feinberg, technical director at Pixar Animation Studios.

The Graduate School of Education at Harvard University has an application deadline of Jan. 5. The application fee for the education program at Harvard University is $85. The Graduate School of Education at Harvard University has 41 full-time faculty on staff with a 3.6:1 ratio of full-time equivalent doctoral students to full-time faculty.

The Harvard Graduate School of Education stresses usable knowledge—whether students hope to teach, create policy, or research. In just one year, students can earn a master’s degree in one of 13 areas, such as Mind, Brain and Education and International Education Policy. Doctoral degrees typically take three years to complete, and, for a break from the Massachusetts winters, doctoral students can elect to spend a semester or two studying at the University of California—Berkeley Graduate School of Education.

The school has programs committed to helping the nation’s struggling schools, like WIDE World, a series of online training courses for teachers, and the Change Leadership Group, which examines routes of systemic improvement for schools and districts. The Doctor of Education Leadership program, which readies graduate students to spearhead reform, is tuition free. Students looking for extracurricular opportunities can partake in programs such as Project Zero, a study of the effects of art on learning, and can work in research hubs like the Center on the Developing Child.

Another perk of attending graduate school at Harvard: students can enroll in courses at the university’s other schools, including the highly ranked John F. Kennedy School of Government and Business School, as well as in courses at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Select students may be able to enroll part time, though some degrees require a full-time commitment. There is no evening degree option. Alumni of HGSE include school administrators like Mount Holyoke College President Joanne V. Creighton; government officials such as Tom Payzant, the former U.S. Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education; and entrepreneurs including Twitter cocreator Dom Sagolla.
