Founded in 1949, Shinshu University is a national university in Japan consisting of 8 undergraduate faculties and 6 graduate schools spread across 5 campuses over Nagano Prefecture. Nagano is well known for its rich natural resources and stunning landscapes. "Shinshu", the endearing former name of the Nagano region, is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Visitors from across the globe come to Shinshu to enjoy "Kamikochi National Park" in the Northern Japan Alps, National Treasure sites such as "Matsumoto Castle" and "Zenkoji Temple", and numerous outdoor activities that include trekking in summer and skiing/snowboarding in winter. In fact, Nagano City proudly hosted the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 1998. Nestled in a safe and quiet environment, Shinshu University's campuses are inspiring places for study and research. Since the time of the once-flourishing silk industry, Nagano has been home to several world-class manufacturing companies in modern history, with a particular strength in precision machinery. Moreover, Shinshu University has ranked first in the "Nationwide University Local Contribution Ranking" for 4 consecutive years and is ramping up its collaborative research efforts with local industries in fundamental sciences such as fiber engineering, carbon science and technology, and more. Key Educational PrincipleCreation of graduates able to solve social issues while maintaining an enriched sense of humanity to serve as future leaders in society Shinshu University has 8 faculties at 5 campuses across Nagano Prefecture. First-year students from all faculties study together at the School of General Education in the Matsumoto Campus. From the second year onwards, they move to the campus of their respective faculty. Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Economics and Law, Faculty of Science, School of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, and Faculty of Textile Science and Technology Division of Arts (Master's Program), Graduate School of Education (Master's Program, Professional Degree Program), Division of Industrial and Social Studies (Master's Program), Graduate School of Science and Technology (Master's Program), Graduate School of Medicine (Master's Program, Doctoral Program, Doctoral Program 1st stage, Doctoral Program 2nd stage), and Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology (Doctoral Program)*1 *1 The Doctoral Programs of Medicine and Science and Technology will be combined to form a single program from FY 2018. Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER), International Center for Science and Innovation (Global Aqua Innovation Center), Global Education Center (GEC), University Library, Center for Health, Center for Safety and Environmental Management, Integrated Intelligence Center (IIC), Gender Equality Promotion Center, University Hospital, Organization for Education and Student Welfare, Shinshu University-Innovative Research & Liaison Organization (SUIRLO), and Affiliated Schools (Kindergartens, Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools) Shinshu University Education Overview The Global Education Center (GEC) aims to promote global education and international collaborative research. For this, the GEC provides tutor services, in which international students are matched with a Japanese student tutor to support his/her study at the university and life in Japan. The GEC also offers intensive Japanese Language classes to help international students. The "Forest of Knowledge" is a fund sponsored by local residents to partially support the travel and living expenses of international students who meet certain conditions. Moreover, Shinshu University offers an employment promotion program for qualifying international students. The purpose of this program is to develop high-level professionals who demonstrate superior knowledge in their major and have the ability to adapt to the culture of regional companies in Japan. The ground-breaking Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER) was established in 2014. ICCER’s resources are channeled into 5 unique research fields: Carbon Science and Technology, Energy and Environmental Science, Fiber Engineering, Mountain Science, and Biomedical Science. ICCER aims to boost research and technological innovation capability through careful development of its young professors as well as collaborative projects with distinguished researchers from around the world. Five Next-generation Research Centers were also established following after ICCER in 2016: Fungal and Microbial Dynamism, Agricultural Food Industry, Social Systems, Next Generation Medicine, and Aerospace Systems. Great achievements are expected from these centers as well. Additionally, 2014 marked the beginning of the national-level industry-academia-government collaborative project called "Global Aqua Innovation Center for Improving Living Standards and Water-sustainability", which combines several leading technologies to promote social system innovation towards the goal of sustainably providing clean and safe water around the world. http://www.shinshu-u.ac.jp/coi/english/ Based on our efforts in these unique advanced research clusters, we have recently been able to embark on another national-level industry-academia-government collaborative project, the “Program on Open Innovation Platform with Enterprises, Research Institute and Academia (OPERA)".
