Nagoya City University is one of Japan’s leading public universities. For short, the university is known as NCU or Meishidai, which translates as City Uni. The university’s history dates back to 1884, the foundation of the Nagoya School of Pharmacy. Nagoya City University itself was established in 1950 in a merger between the pharmaceutical school and Nagoya Women’s Medical College. NCU has six faculties: the Medical School, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Design and Architecture and Nursing. There is also the Graduate School of Natural Sciences. Nagoya City University Hospital was established in 1931 and in 1995 it was designated an advanced treatment hospital. Its Medical Design Research Centre explores innovative treatment methods, and students get the benefit of hands on experience in this pioneering facility. The university is based in four campuses spread across the city of Nagoya in central Japan: Sakurayama, Takiko, Tanabe-dori and Kita Chikusa. Several major events are held in Nagoya each year, including the Nagoya Sumo Tournament, Summer Festival and World Cosplay Summit. Nagoya itself has plenty to see, but it’s well known for being an easy link between Japan’s old and new capital cities: Kyoto and Tokyo. The two are like different sides of a coin -- Tokyo is one of the world’s most modern and eccentric cities, while Kyoto is famed for its numerous temples and its traditional way of life, where geishas can still be spotted on an evening walk.
