Founded in Antalya in 1982, Akdeniz University was the result of incorporating several higher education establishments in Antalya, Burdur and Isparta, in Turkey’s Western Mediterranean region. In 1992, those buildings in Isparta were moved to the Süleyman Demirel University, and then in 2006, the Burdur Faculty of Veterinary Science made the move to Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. Spread across 3.74km² of land between Dumlupinar Boulevard and the Uncalı district (to the west of Antalya city) are 20 faculties, seven graduate schools, three schools, one conservatory and 11 vocational schools. On-campus facilities include an indoor swimming pool, indoor sports hall, fitness centre, soccer fields and tennis courts. In January 2011, the country’s first-ever full face transplant was perfomed at the university hospital by Turkish surgeon Dr. Ömer Özkan and his team. Notable alumni include the film director, screenwriter and producer Baris Eyriboz. As a member of the EUA (the European Universities Associaton) and the IAU (the International Association of Universities), Akdeniz University puts internationalisation at the forefront of its progression. The university has established 325 agreements within the Erasmus framework and 60 agreements in 23 different countries with the Mevlana Exchange Programme. Antalya is Turkey’s biggest international sea resort and the country’s fifth most populated city, with approximately one million people living in its metropolitan area. Shielded from the northerly winds by the Taurus Mountains, Antalya has hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.
